uhm. is there a way to break open a password protected rar file? i read somewhere that you can use MC(midnight commander) but it looked pretty difficult to use.

you need to use a password breaker and it takes a very long time. Midnight commander is just a file manager.

Unless it's a very short password then there's no way really, it's just not feasible to bruteforce it using a normal PC. It will take you months and you might never find the password.

I don't want to start a new topic, and since we're talking about passwords, then what about wi-fi connections? I just found out that my neighbours have a wi-fi connection, but it has a password, any way around (besides asking them the password :p )?

Depends on the encryption, WEP is very easy to crack whereas WPA is quite a bit more difficult, but that's not really something we want discussed on RomUlation as we find it morally wrong.

I used to use a thing called RarKey or something like that, which promised it could figure out passwords for the .rar, but it never worked since I just didn't have the time.

in otherwords...aside from asking nicely theres no easy way of breaking the password?

    no feasible way no.

Even if you were able to guess your neighbors password or brute force it, it would take either random luck or a really long time, then all they have to do is ban your MAC Address and change the password and it'd be over. Stealing a properly secured wi-fi isn't as easy as some of the people floating around the internet make you think it is :)

    Easiest way:
Get your own wireless network and internet connection!

It's easier than you think, mac bans are by no means secure. My mate at university was mac banned from the uni network, less than a minute later he was back on. WEP takes an average of 5 minutes - half an hour to break depending on how heavily the network is used (the higher the usage on the network, the less time it takes to break) WPA can be harder, and unlike WEP, depends on the strength of the password. MAC Address bans are by far the easiest form of wireless security to break.

Sure, they can change their MAC Address, but if you have a 20 character Alpha Numeric password, not using Dates and words. And you have a MAC Address permissions enabled, and you monitor your wireless router's activity consistantly (Check to see who is connected), there won't be anyone able to hop onto your network for long if at all.

I would mention turning off the broadcast signal, but anyone actually looking to hack into someone's wireless network already bypasses the broadcasting.

How about changing it to an address that is authorised to use the network? easy enough to find one.

Also, like I said before, regardless of how long or complex your password is, if you're using WEP it should still take less than half an hour to break in.

The only reason to use WEP is to let your DS connect, which isn't reason enough for me to use it :) Sucks that a DS can't use the more advanced wireless securities like the PSP can (Unless there is some way to mod your DS to use them, I dunno).

    Edit:
As far as the MAC Addresses go, I know it's not perfect, but it's another step, and it doesn't take much to put it there.

its possible to firmware update to WPA if such a firmware update is released. WPA2 requires more complex hardware.

No stupid as RSA checking. Could be done with a flashed DS.

its the wireless card firmware that needs updating.
