so I am going to buy R4 soon, but I was wondering, do I need a SD memorycard to make it work? I heard something about that I would need. I am planning to buy this set: http://modpiiri.com/images/R4.jpg
And if I do need one of these memory cards, wich one of these should I buy: http://www.modpiiri.com/?sivu=tuotteet&k=24&ak=26&l=2&s=0&cid=24
The page is in finnish, but at least there are names and pics ^^'

And I also heard about a cheating mecanism included in R4. Is it true, and if it is, does it mean like... Gameshark?
And this set of mine also includes "Moonshell". I heard its a media player. Does it like play movies and music on my DS?
And skins? I heard you can get them from somewhere... I do not know how they effect though, but where can they be downloaded, and how they can be installed?
I'd also need a proper installing guide.
Oh and the mini-CD contains guide, moonshell and R4 v1.08 kernel (or newer), just what are these? Sure, guide, I get that, and I already asked about moonshell, but whatabout the kernel? is it like the data?

Sorry for all the guestions ^^'

yes, you need a memory card, of the ones you linked I suggest 'Sandisk MicroSD kortti 2048 Mb (2 gb), 3 in 1'. Be aware that the 4GB one on that page will NOT work on the R4. Kingston memory cards are also good.

    other questions:

-The R4 supports Action Replay codes, which are similar to gameshark

-Yes moonshell will play movies and music, movies must be converted to a special format though.

-Skins I'm not sure about, but there's threads about them on this forum.

-The kernel is the firmware, which is the software the flashcart needs to operate (essentially tells it how to read rom files). 1.08 is ancient, the current version is 1.18, you can get the latest from www.linfoxdomain.com/nintendo/ds and there is an installation tutorial in our tutorials section. Keeping it up to date is important to allow you to play the newest roms.

Thank you, thank you so very much. That infact made ti all clearer. And yes, I was infact planning to buy the 2GB one. ^^
And action replay, eh? Good I happen to be familiar with that..
No need for any further help though, now that you, Loony, kindly answered most of my guestions, I haven't got anything unkown anymore. I own you one, Loony. :3

    EDIT:
Waait I came up with one guestion... I have heard of problems with newest games working on this lovely thing. Will Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Time/Darkness work? I heard updating the kernel would work... I think 2.0 is the newest. So does anyone know?
And I want to say this one more time: THANK YOU SO MUCH LOONY. It's awesome how kind people around here are.

It's very easy, just download the latest firmware from the above site 1.18, Linfox Domain, extract it, then just overwrite your previous firmware files with the new ones(if it has any on it of course) or just put all of the files inside the english etc folder straight onto your MicroSD root, the place you are in as soon as you browse it. Yes Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorer's of Time/Darkness will work with 1.18, I have beaten it without any problems on my R4 :)

Thank you. I infact found a rather good tutorial, with video and audio, of how it all is installed.
This time the biggest thanks goes to Anandjones, for telling me that the game works :)

Double posting again, sorry, sorry ^^'

But anyways I have now ordered R4 and a 2GB SD memory card.
I think I now know rather everything, but I still have one little guestion.
I think I know the answer, wich would be yes, but I just want to make sure.
Once you have put all the files from the english folder to the SD card, and made
the "Games" folder, can you put many games at once in the folder?
And does anyone know where the .sav files appear in? The same folder? :3

You can just edit the new post into the old post. This is a warning.

Ya they apear right next to the game file. you can put as many games in your R4 as the memory card will let you. just remember if your gona delete a game keep the save file just incace you want to re-download the game again and you dont want to start from square 1. (>0.0)>

Yes it will appear in the same directory. Remember, you don't have to have your .nds rom games in a folder, you can just leave it straight on the root of your MicroSD, but if you're organized and/or don't like a mess and don't want to look for ages for a ROM, best to do it.

If you want any help with cheat.dats just ask me! It's my specialty! I can also make usrcheat.dats but I am better at finding cheat.dats and testing them. Link to topic/thread is here https://www.romulation.org/forum/index.php/topic,6176.0.html
The one there right now on my latest post is pretty good but ask me if it doesn't have cheats for your current game!

Action Replay codes? Thanks, but no thanks. I wanna play at least the first round with no cheats :D

EDIT: Hi, the R4 game today, put when I put it in the comp, the light wich starts flashing is red, what should I do?

EDIT: Uh... no need to answer anymore. So it came today, it had 1.17 data, even though I added 1.18, and all works fine. Thanks for all the help! :D

    EDIT (OH GOD HELP!):
Yesterday, evertyhing worked just fine, but today the first bug appeared: THE WHITE SCREEN OF DOOM.
Everything works just 100% fine, but when opening Pokemon mystery dungeon 2, the white screen of doom appears, and doesn't leave. It's just a white screen, and the game goes nowhere. Any help please? >.<
The game worked just fine yesterday. If it is due the R4 or the microcard itself, I can get new ones for free, thanks to the guarantee. The guarantee of R4 itself will only last for 28 days anymore, when the guarantee of the microcard will last 4 years and 354 days, I think. So please, somebody help me! D:

Yeah, if you edit your post, you can tell if you edited it, it says "new" when you go into the section it's in, but there's no New Posts orange button. Are you absolutely sure you updated the firmware correctly to v1.18, because Explorer's of Time/Darkness works fine on that version. If you boot up your R4, it should say the firmware version somewhere on the screen. If it sort of freezes, reformatt your MicroSD, making sure to back everything up. If that doesn't work, you can try reinstalling the firmware, or maybe try changing back to a previous firmware version. Or there's chances that it's fake, but if you were able to play it before, then that isn't the problem, as the fake versions don't even boot into the menu properly.

Yeah well the game worked fine just yesterday... And I am sure I installed 1.18.
Being such of a newbie to stuff like this, could you please explain me this boot stuff and what do you mean with back up? copying all the roms and such?

Does "THE WHITE SCREEN OF DOOM" come on when you play any other game? Or "THE WHITE SCREEN OF DOOM" comes on when you turn on your DS? If you dont even get the R4 menue screen then its probably the filmware, same thing happened to me when I first got my R4. All I had to do was re-download filmware at the website and it workes fine now.

Booting means just starting up the R4. Backing up means copying all your files somewhere, so you don't lose any data, because reformatting gets rid of everything. He stated the white screen appears when he tries to start Pokemon Mystery Dungeon 2, so it's probably not the firmware.

And it has Real-Time save, which is actually save states. I knew you were going to post something about CycloDS, you're turning into Seph. I need to get one so I can join the club.
