I have 1 day left to renew my version of Windows, but I do not have the means to do so... So I have decided to abandon windows all together and go with Linux. I went to the website Tuxs.org, and I answered some questions to see what version of Linux would be best for me.
My results were Fedora, and OpenSUSE.
Here is what I need to know... which one is better, and how can I go about installing it?
I was given download links on either site, so do I just write one to a disk and treat it as though it were something like a windows install disk?

    openSUSE is easier for beginners.

alright I'll go with that one... Do I just have to put it on a cd?

burn an image like you would for a game (it might be a DVD though) and then boot from it. Back up your hard disk first though, the installer will wipe it completely.

Alright... I think I'll go with openSUSe, and since I don't have anything too important on this computer, I'll just put the ones I really need onto a flash drive.
You've been a good help Loony, Thanks

wait... one more question... do I have to dual boot with windows, or can I just wipe the hard drive of everything and have only Linux

You can wipe your whole hard drive, I wouldn't suggest a dual boot for beginners anyways.

Well I would.. but getting someone to partitian your hard drive for you.
    Sorry rambling.

openSUSE would be the better option for you, it's more user friendly, and no, you do not HAVE to dual boot.

Okay, thanks... I'm having my bro-in-law do it for me since he's gone to school for this kind of stuff... I don't see the point in dual booting since I won't be able to use Windows anymore (they decided to deactivate it for me and not let me use my product key)

Okay, another question... how do I configure the internet?
    I have a wireless USB adapter, it's a Linksys WUSB11v4
I tried looking it up, and they were saying something about using ndiswrapper to change the drivers from windows to Linux, it just did't really make sense to me

sorry, this whole linux thing is new to me

Ahhh don't apologise, everyone struggles through these exact questions when they move away from microshit.

Okay, I'm assuming it's possible for you to get a wired connection fine? If that's the case, I'd suggest you use that, as a temporary solution.

In the mean time, ndiswrapper is bassically software that switches your drivers over from windows operability to allow them to work on a Unix based OS

Remember Unix is basically everything 'cept windows... including macs and linux distros.

I'm not too familiar with it to be frank..

But I did do a little research on your behalf.

This is everything you need to know about it.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NDISwrapper#Use

Aaaaand this is the actual software itself.
    http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/ndiswrapper/index.php?title=Main_Page

By the looks of it, it's all automatic and does everything for you, just install it, and use your package manager to install it.

Then it should be clean sailing from there.

if you don't activate it then it stops working after a set number of days.

Well yeah but, I activated it about a year and a half ago, It said the I had installed new hardware (which I didn't) so I had to reactivate it, and my original code didn't work... But I have everything fixed now
