open windows volume control panel and make sure the microphone is enabled (you might have to switch to the recording panel in file -> properties), any sound card driver will allow the use of a microphone so if your soundcard is working then you dont need another driver. Also make sure its plugged into the right jack (usually the pink one).

Software wise, Audacity is supposed to be good.

how do you enable the microphone? and where is this "file ->> properties"?
my volume control only has the following:

    master volume
    wave
    SW synth
    CD player
    headphones

    please help.

my mistake, its options -> properties, in there is a radio button for recording. Select that and the options change, make sure microphone is ticked then OK out and the volume panel now shows microphone. Put a tick in 'select' and adjust the volume as necessary.

if microphone doesn't work you can also try the line in jack (blue)

put the microphone next to the speaker and turn the volumes up until it starts whistling. If it doesn't then there's something wrong with the microphone or the sound card.
