This is not a bad move.
They say they want to make sure the games are focused to the mainstream probably due to them wanting to make money in there business.

Could be a smart move, their rpg's have gone downhill since they merged.

To be honest I haven't seen an anime themed FPS yet. Could be just me. Hell, they could ditch the anime.

I've said it before elsewhere in different words. But The merger of those two powerhouse companies was a mistake. Square Soft was a solid company, a powerhouse, and a top contender. Enix was a solid company with a good base of games. However the merger has lead to an overall drop in game quality. While there are still some shining stars in the mix, the overall concept quality has gone down. This has even affected their big hit titles. Final Fantasy, X, X-2, XII, XIII.... they have all been less than par compared to the past games.

The problem falls back on the man with his eye on the bank accounts. If he wasn't there, we would see a fountain of awesome games. But as long as there is someone there who makes descisions based on cashflow. Creativity goes out the window inf avor of cookie cutter best selling titles.

While I admit to being a Final Fantasy fan, my favorite Square Soft/Enix Titles are not even Final Fantasy. Parasite Eve, The Bouncer, Star Ocean, Ergieze: God bless the ring. Radiata Stories. Maybe if the company looked to the fans and asked them what they wanted to see next they would get the clue.

I for one Look forward to the prospect of a sequal to the 3rd Birthday [The game hinted at it a bit with some of the unlock-able content] But for the most part I would rather see new games, not sequels. Yea each final fantasy game is a different world. [with the exception of a few] but the franchise leads you to expect certain things. They have been riding the Final Fantasy horse since it saved their ass from bankruptcy back in the day.

The Final Fantasy series is also liked a tired cow. Over-milked.

As long as people keep buying final fantasy, square enix will keep making them. I don't think 13 is a bad game and although linear, it was enjoyable.

I do think they should listen to there fans more but what's the point of making twewy2 if only a small following is going to buy it and they will only make a small profit when they keep making the games that they know sells well.

Well at least this would've been a better reason for a Nanashi no Game international release to be cancelled than the reason we got (focus groups said it was a bad idea to release it in english because you couldn't shoot things in the game)....

Since the article is almost 3 years old, it has almost no bearing on today's Square Enix. I can see during the economic crash of 2008 a concentration of a companies work force being a good idea, so you don't waste precious little cash and sales you have on non-profitable endeavors.

Games like Last Remnant and NIER have came out since. While neither are great games, I don't believe either could have been considered "mainstream". Both did some very non-usual things for Square Enix RPGs. Definitely very "Creative", whether it was a good result or bad result.

And of course there was Final Fantasy XIV. I don't think anyone could call that mainstream...

So let's not jump the gun and start fuming over a 3 year old topic.

I never get this, FF is pretty damn different and it's hard to say it's milked since it's vastly different in terms of combat system, story and characters from game to game. Hell, the only thing most FF's share is a couple of summons and themes. It's one thing to say CoD is being milked or GH being milked and FF being milked.

Whoa man, I loved Nier, awesome game.

Kind of Ironic that people are using TWEWY as a reason this is a bad idea, when TWEWY came out in the US in 2008, and the article is from 2008, discussing SE's 2007 financial situation.

Again people, pay attention to dates of "news" articles.

I kept seeing that and hearing that statement about how Final Fantasy is milked and maybe the only stupid reason behind it is the fact that the name states "Final". I don't even know what they meant by that.

Final Fantasy was Square's last hope of staying alive back in the NES days because they were in financial turmoil, hence, Final Fantasy.

Though often attributed to the company allegedly having been threatened with bankruptcy, Sakaguchi explained that the game was his personal last-ditch effort in the game industry and that its title, Final Fantasy, stemmed from his feelings at that time; had the game not sold well, he would have quit the business and gone back to university.
