4gb microSD (non-sdhc) in an R4 cart...

Has anyone here attempted to use a 4gb non-sdhc microSD memory card with an original R4 cart? In theory, it should work since if the 4gb card is non-high capacity and FAT32, but I've never read anything on these boards from anyone who has attempted to use one.

I have read issues with 4gb non-sdhc cards having slow read/write speeds and reliability issues, though. THe reason I ask is, I plan on buying a CycloDS in the very near future for sdhc-capabilities and ROM compatibility reasons, but I'd like to keep putting my R4 to good use by using it as an archive for the older games I've downloaded and played. If I could use a higher capacity card than the standard 2gb (non-sdhc, of course), that would be great.

I've found a good deal for one on newegg, with free shipping, but I'm not sure if it will work optimally and I can't find anything online that gives me a definitive answer one way or the other. Is a 4mb/sec speed too slow (I think my current is only 5mb/sec and it works great)?

Any input on this would be greatly appreciated.

There is not many comments or reports because 4GB MicroSD cards that are non-HC are rare.

I would imagine that when they first came out they didn't waste much time developing the higher read/write speed models before they just moved onto the SDHC models. So the rumors of slow speeds of non-HC 4GB cards may likely be true.

Also, where are you finding them on Newegg? The only 4GB cards listed I can find are SDHC cards. (or "deals" for 2x2GB cards sold as "4GB")

I'm sure he's talking about earlier when they were out in their short period.

Here's the link to the card...

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134808

It's an actual 4gb non-high capacity SDMicro. It says that the speed is Class 4 (4mb/sec), and since I've never read anything about what the recommended minimum card speed is for DS carts in general, I have no idea if this is even worth considering.

A quick google search says that model is actually SDHC

I think the model you're finding in your Google search is Model SD4/4GBET (item #N82E16820134807), which is indeed that SDHC version. The one that I linked, model SDC4/4GBET (item #N82E16820134808) seems to be the standard SD.

Both models have separate listings on Newegg, and the SDHC model is clearly listed as such:

    Standard? - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134808

    SDHC - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134807

Crap. Never mind guys. I blew up the photos in the pictures provided, and the microSD card clearly says that it is SDHC. Back to the drawing board, I guess.

Still, does anyone know the minimum recommended speed of the SD card for any DS cart?

12x should be enough. Get a Kingston or Sandisk.

Already have four Kingstons. Thanks for your help.

Just thought that if I could find a 4gb non-sdhc, it would be worth the risk to see if it's worthwhile. Suppose I let my hopes get too high on this one.

It looks like I'm also going to be collecting more 2 GB Micro until I get a newer card :)
