This laptop is about as big as a collage-ruled notebook and is installed with...
    900 mhz processor
    4- 16 GB flash storage
    512 Mb flash ram
    Built-in wireless

No CD drive, but still... betas said with the standard pre-installed custom-built linux os takes about 10 seconds to fully boot up. Insane. Great for a student.

Comes out between August and September. Keep you're eyes peeled.

Is it like one of those laptops made for the 3rd world?

Doubt it. It appeared in Popular Science (a popular science journal, hence the name). I plan to get it this Christmas along with a copy of Super Smash Brothers Brawl :).

I'd probably hold off for a year when the 160GB HDD and Quad Core models come out. Of course, desktops will have 2TB HDD and Baker's-Dozen Cores, so it'll still be a pretty crappy laptop :p

Not really, because if you want a really cheap laptop that can fit snugly in you're pants that you would just watch youtube , make forum posts, write a couple of papers on, and emulate SNES games, you're pretty much good to go.

  6. actualy i hear it was made for 3rd world contries. my mother in law was talking about it. the reason it's 200 dollers is cause you don't need to plug it in it has an internal generator with a crank on the out side of it that you have to crank to get about 20 minutes of run time and supposed to have big like antena on it to pick up the net.. supposed to be kinda cude actually but cheaply made so people with crappy contried can get them

Nah that's the $100 dollar laptop, this one is different. It's a little bit more powerful and comes with internal power supply so it's aimed at the consumer market.

it's like a p4 laptop 7 years ago. if you look at the cpu specs, those are like p4 specs when they were first released.

you can install external drives because there are like 4-6 usb2 ports.

it's expensive becuase of the hard drive. that hard drive i believe is like one of those card memory thingy, such as compact flash and san disk or memory sticks.

the battery life should probably be around 3 hours because of the smaller parts.

btw, single core is fine if you don't multi-task. but then again there are programs that use multi-threading to share it's work load so it can finish faster.

It's called flash storage, and it doesn't read form a disk, that's why it takes 10 seconds to fully boot. Hard disks are cheaper, but don't fit into that space. Intro at www.eeepc.asus.com

should be longer because of not having a hard disk. Hard drives drain power badly because they have moving parts, flash memory does not, therefore it draws considerably less power. The worst part of a laptop for draining the battery is the display backlight, then the hard disk/optical drive.

Actually, heard it weighs less than 1 kilogram, so they couldn't make the battery big or heavy.

One laptop per child... one laptop per town would be a great start.

Those laptops are all colourful and have to antennas on the side which look slightly like ears.

I already have a mac book is does the job, that laptop isn't very powerful and isn't worth the money.

Interesting points, but Ive been looking at Acer Aspire 1 netbooks, the 9" ones.Ive seen various specs and various prices.Ive not seen a better price for spec equivelant than them ones.
For around £150,which is a few quid more than $200 you should get

    Atom 1.6ghz processor
    120+gb h-d
    1ghz ram
    Wi-fi

XP can be loaded on via usb stick,Ive made up a "special 2gb" one
