    I just read this article over at PC Gamer:

    http://www.pcgamer.com/2014/08/21/windows-9-preview-set-to-arrive-late-september/

    And my initial reaction was...

    Is Microsoft really this dense to release another OS that will most likely fail yet again? Haven't they learned anything with Windows 8/8.1?

    Instead of releasing another OS they should just fix Windows 8 or better yet just continue support for Windows 7 seeing as it's more stable and supports better compatibility with Legacy software like games.

    windows 7 ends mainstream support in january. I heard a few different things about win 9, one of which was it would be subscription based like adobe software is now, which I dont see going down very well.

    I also heard that after the failure of windows 8/8.1, they decided to go back to the drawing board with 9 (originally it was going to be a follow on from 8.1 continuing with the metro theme and tablet style interface)

    Why so early?
    XP only finished a little while ago, and now 7 is going too?

    It seems that they have decided to bring back the start menu. Now that is a good news :)

    I was wondering the same thing. Maybe they want to get people off of Win 7 (which works decently, but not as great as XP ever will be mind them) and switch to this newer OS ASAP regardless of the fact that this newer OS has the potential to also cave :p

    And they needed to make an entirely newer OS just for that!? Such a waste if you ask me.

    Yes, the new OS is solely to bring back the start menu.

    I suspect the early end to mainstream support may be to try and prop up windows 8/8.1 by forcing people to upgrade.

    I'd actually go for this one because this looks more promising :)

    Windows 8/8.1 works for me, you need at least a dual-core for this OS. Mind you there is nothing to fix, you need to try it first before complaining.
    The best part is it's fast and you don't need those damn AVs. If you heard Windows 8 has a built-in AV well it works great. Your PC is like a human, you need to protect it by not going to untrusted websites, random clicking thru ads and don't treat your usb devices like a whore. I have 2 laptops running genuine Windows 8.1, the other one is a Windows tablet.

    running a windows computer without an AV is asking for trouble. Don't believe the microsoft claims to the contrary. you dont need to visit dodgy websites to get a virus or trojan.

    @8bitstory: I don't want to try out a newer OS that will not have support for legacy software.

    I've recently accepted the fact I can not use SNESTool on Win 7 64 bit without using DOSBox. I wouldn't want to give up anything more.

    Also Win 8's UI is atrocious, just because touch screen is the in thing with smartphones it doesn't mean it'll be great for Desktops :p

    Hold on a sec. I am bothered with Windows 9, I know Microsoft upgrades its OS every 4 years. This means your current Windows will no longer be updated and you will need an av.
    @Loonylion
    I am not bothered with that problem as long as my files are protected, it's been a long time since I encountered a file-wiping virus/malware. etc.
    As long as you know what you are doing, you'll be fine.

    @Azolev Enhar Sohac
    Well, can you imagine having a PC without Windows? That's microsoft wants, turn your desktop like a smartphone. microsoft is adapting the trend to counter its rivals like android. Like I said, I have a Windows tablet actually it's an Ultrabook, the beauty of it is I have able to see the difference between android and whatnot. Windows Store is good, you can get free games for 5 year olds, and yes there are malware/adware/ etc inside Windows Store that is easy to identify.

    btw console emulation on android is better only if you have a 10 inch tablet.

    @8bitstory let me give you a suggestion if loonylion says something? you take a deep breath, you read over it and then you shut up. why? because he is an expert, it's part of his day to day job.

    lol. You don't need to be an expert or IT administrator to protect your system. Let me tell you something a Nurse graduate, yes a nurse. Applied for a PC technician, he got the job. he knows how to build PC, installation, software, windows blah blah...so your point?

    His point is Loonylion is the god of computing and how dare you question his godness.

    knowing how to build a computer is not the same thing as doing it almost every day for nearly 20 years. as it happens, computer and network security is my specialism. A technician is a long way from an administrator.

    The only other person I know of (on the internetz only & not personally) who could possibly have way more experience with computers than loony has would be "A Nonny Moose" from Simtropolis...

    ..who claims he's been working on computers as early as the 70's.

    What he's trying to say is that he knows what he's talking about, and that any argument you try will be shut down in some awful ways.
