Right I have to edit the hosts file in system32, but it keeps saying im not admin even though im the only user on my laptop. Anything I can do overturn since I can't select save as admin since there ain't an option

you need to log in as the built in administrator account.

if the start menu does not say 'Administrator' as the username, then you aren't.

not the same thing. There is a built in account called 'Administrator' that has higher permissions than the 'administrators' group, which your user account is a member of

on the login screen you need to change the username to 'Administrator' then use administrator's password. If your computer came preinstalled with windows 7, the administrator password is probably blank.

no. change it on the login screen, not in control panel. you want to log in to the account named 'administrator'

yes that screen. I think if you press ctrl + alt + del twice on that screen it changes to a username and password box (that was how XP did it). Change the username to 'Administrator' and log in.

It doesn't work. (probably me, not you guys :) ) You don't think it might be down to me not having a genuine win7

Hmm...the CTRL+ALT+DEL x2 doesn't seem to work, so i can't remember it...but for some odd reason, and it may be due to me having UAC disabled, i can edit my HOSTS file perfectly fine?

EDIT: just remembered...somehow i gave myself full administrative privileges..can't remember how though =/

EDIT2: type the following into command prompt without quotes (or copy and paste it) "net user administrator /active:yes"

Then log off and go to the administrator account! XD

Access is denied. I think my computer really does hate me

    EDIT: Here what it says.

OK, another idea, when you find the command prompt, instead of just opening it, right-click, run as administrator, then enter the prompt from above..

EDIT: If that still doesn't work, there is another way, but you'll need your windows 7 disk, and to launch the command prompt from it =/

BTW, this is what it looks like for me...

I ran cmd as an admin and then I entered the command and it showed same screen thankfully. So now I have two users administrator and my lewis one is there anyway I can just make my main one have these 'greater powers'

    Thanks
