So, I just started. I was browsing the internet looking for GC iso's when I found this site. I looked it over and joined up, hoping to get my filthy greedy hands on an iso when I found that overdecorated "Not enough points" page and smacked myself on the forehead. So I did the whole "OMG what is going on"-noob-thing and THEN decided to find out about this point system. And in truth it really is good. It's a prime example of socialism done right (and I mean that in a good way), which is in truth what the internet really is. But I was thinking what if one night after we all did our geek-thing and fell asleep, the creators decided to use that magic lamp they had stashed in the basement and convert tho whole site to a torrent host? Would it better for better or worse? Torrent files are in the kb's as far as size goes and instead of needing to keep all these freakin iso's and roms on-site, they would be shared p2p. But of course for every scumbag like me who thought that joining will allow him to download4free there will be a goddam leech who downloads a game and doesn't seed. Just an idea to get a thread started. What do you guys think?

A gamecube torrent would take a week to download on my connection, on a direct download I have it in a couple of hours.
    Terrible idea.

This would be completely void if we still seeded the files. Unless of course your parents won't allow you to open ports in your router.

Problem with torrents are that they are track-able. RomUlation has always been about direct-downloads, if we were to convert to a torrent site we could probably lose the point restriction, but we would at the same time allow all downloads to be tracked.

Also I think there are already a ton of torrent sites, I really don't want to host one as well.

Ive never had a torrent faster than 5kb/s, im on mobile broadband it doesn't matter how many seeds it has, I never get good speeds.

    Probably restrictions from your ISP.

One of the problems with maintaining a torrent site is the whole seeds to leechers ratio. Knowing the people on this site, you'll be getting heavy leechers who don't seed back, making the downloads almost worthless. Actually getting the content out is also a pain in the ass, since you'll likely have to move a number of copies out to seeders from the original host (Romulation), which is in essence exactly the same as offering a direct download anyway.

Further to this, torrents involve more than one step. We still have people who bitch about not knowing what a RAR file is. I'm not saying torrenting is complex or anything, but do you seriously think these people could operate one?

I wonder how many people actually SEED after downloading.

I do. For a day or two.

I can understand why people don't want to seed. No one knows who is actually seeding, and so you don't feel like you're actually gaining.

I do until my ratio is at least 1 or higher.
On one file I seed, I have a humongous ratio. :p

That, and quite a few people (me included) have limited bandwidth per month and would prefer being able to use fast internet rather than seed.

I have unlimited off-peak downloads (2am-8am) so I tend to seed then, but with the torrenting/downloading I do at night my speeds decrease due to the amount of activity on my line if I'm seeding too much. If my caps were higher (and RomU was legally able to deliver torrents) I'd seed some of my stuff but as it stands the number of reliable seeds in this community would be very small, especially given how many ROMs they'd be giving out to so many connections.

leechers are the scum of the earth i like to think of them as parasites, they suck you dry with no intent on keeping the host alive

nice display of ignorance. A leecher in torrent terms is someone who is downloading and does not yet have the whole file. it has absolutely no bearing on how long they seed for.

The best speed Ive had on torrent was 1.4mb/s,but I only download a film with size 1.4gb max.

And I leech off of torrent sites as I dont upload anything, well not deliberately. But I do help people with their computers problems-so they are leeching off of me LOL

I've only torrented a game ONCE and that's all I ever plan to torrent it - it was the official free release of mechwarrior 4 and I used their own software to download it. I got a normal rate but you HAD to seed it while d/ling if you wanted it. I don't seed it anymore, obviously.

And if I said anything newbish about how torrents work, it's because, as I said, this was the only one I've ever used and the only one I ever plan to use until it's safe.

true, true. But I don't want to worry about leechers and seeders and speeders or whatever. I want my file, I copy my ddls, I start Jdownloader, and I'm done.

the only thing that sux is you can find much more on torrents.

My whole computer got infected because of those shitty torrents! (downloaded a few virus infected games, all people said they are safe...no sarcasm)
Plus they are slow as hell.

If RomUlation would turn into a torrent site I would never touch the frontpage again. I hate torrents.
