Hello all, I've been thinking of buying a PSP for some time now, and I've heard they were mod able, but some newer ones are impossible/hard to mod.

So I was wondering which version is the easiest to mod and maybe if someone had a guide on how to do it for when I'd end up getting one.

    Thanks in advance!

Easiest one to guarantee you can modify it is the PSP 1000 model "Phat".
Some of the 2000s are hackable. The earlier ones. The special Darth Vader version and the Daxter versions are hackable, plus a couple others.

If they aren't hackable, then you need to keep them at 5.03 or lower to run the exploits required to make the custom firmware programs work.

Are only the special versions of the 2000 hackable?

I would go with the phats if I were you, since, to me, I thought they were more durable when I had it. My Phat took..probally 20 falls on concrete and such..And pretty much all phats are hackable..even thought I never hacked mine..dunno why. xD

    Re: Modding PSP\'s

Google search stores (usually modchip sellers and ones of the like) that sell modable PSPs. Basically, I recommend searching for a slightly dated PSP 2000. I own a few PSPs, so I use 2000s the most. As far as modding goes, you'll need a pandora battery and modified memory stick (google search how to make). Of course, there is much more to the safety and betterment of your console from there, but you'll need to research a bit. I just gave you the essentials. Just be careful, and you'll be well on your way to modified PSP fun.

In response to Phat PSPs, I must say that they are durable, but they are a burden to carry. The homebrew is also not quite as good. Additionally, they don't do UMD Caching, but they are ohso safe. Check out some good deals on them while you're at it; they should be selling at a ripe old price, which would benefit your wallet. ;)

So, my best decision would be to look for a phat or a old 2000 PSP?

Thanks for all the help by the way guys. :)

    Here is my advice.

Just look for a psp 2000 that has 5.03 firmware (since it's hard to tell them apart until you hack them/look at the date code) since that way, if it's one of the newer ones, at least you can have something to work with :)

The Phats are nice, but the slims are better in my opinion.

My friend bought a Phat and it was crap...

He bought a slim and now it's not any good really. He can't run any games hardly (I don't know why...)

    It's up to you really.

If you do get a slim, ensure that you get a Darth Vader or Daxter edition PSP.

Are there any 2k's that aren't slims?(Sorry for all the questions, but I just got introduced to PSP's)

    Nope.

    2000=slim. :p

The Daxter and Darth ones are the ones that are guaranteed to be fully hackable.

Ok, this should be the last of my questions, if it has 5.03 firmware its hackable right?

Thanks alot for your help by the way.

If a PSP Slim that is under the TA88v3 board, then yes.

It is fully hackable no matter what firmware is on it.

The Darth Vader and Daxter PSPs are fully hackable even if they have 6.20.
    Just like the Phats.

So, look for PSP's with either:
    A board lower the TA88v3
    A Vadar/Daxtar
    Or a phat

Thanks a bunch for all you help!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

    No problem. :)

You can either use Hellcat's recovery flasher, or you can use the Pandora method.

If you use the Pandora Method, I suggest buying a Pandora Battery rather than making one.

You can buy them on dealetreme.

I bought a Rockband Package w/ a 3000 in august and the firmware was 5.02 so I was able to hack it. And if you get one with higher firmware just return it.

That's why you buy the PSP 2000s that are hackable. :p

Plus any new PSP you get will be unhackable because they ship them out with the latest firmware which will be above 5.03 by now.

Sorry, but this just brought another question to my mind. :/

Which method is better? Hellcat's method or the Pandora method?

With a Pandora, you are guaranteed to never have a problem if you're PSP is bricked.

But with Hellcat's Recovery Flasher, you can do it for free.

I suggest the Pandora method personally as I have messed up a few times and bricked a couple of PSPs a few times. ::)

And the Pandora Batteries are only $7 on DX.

Also, Pandora Batteries can't be used as a normal battery.

Though I believe hypnos found out how to unbrick his PSP without a Pandora...though I would still suggest the Pandra method. :p
