Yep, it's now the Year of the Mouse, the first of the twelve animals.

Legend has it that when the Creator was going to name the years after animals, they all wanted to be first, so a race across a river was arranged, with the winner being the first to reach the opposite bank. The Mouse rode on the Buffalo's head, and jumped ashore just as the Buffalo reached the bank, so winning the race. The rest of the animals came in the following order: Buffalo, Tiger, Cat (Rabbit in some regions), Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Chicken, Dog and Pig.

To work out what animal you are, simply cycle through the twelve animals, counting back the number of years since you were born. For example, I was born in 1986, and 1983 was the year of the Mouse, thus three years later I was born in the year of the Tiger. My sister, being two years younger than me, was born in the year of the Dragon.

So, happy new year to all who follow a lunar calendar :)

You mean....Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit/Cat, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep/Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig/Boar....

Also....you got it wrong....1984 was the year of the Rat....

Also...for you to be a certain zodiac animal, you have to be born within the Chinese year...
So, for instance, if you were born before 30th February 1984 (Chinese New Year)
    ...you would be Pig/Boar...not Rat

I was born in May 1989...therefore I am....

Each person also has one of five elements associated with them....
Metal, Water, Wood, Fire or Earth....
I don't know how that works....but mine is Earth
