What's Minecraft?
Well kids, if you haven't heard of Minecraft yet you should spend less time watching dubious fetish porn and more time on IRC. Basically this is a sandbox building game, where the only objective is to survive long enough to build some sort of crazy-cool megaproject. It's currently in Alpha, meaning there are a number of bugs in the multiplayer software that the developer has yet to fix. However, the game is still highly playable in both singleplayer and to a lesser degree multiplayer!

So this is a multiplayer server?
That's right. On Borealis we're running the latest playable version of the Minecraft Alpha server software, so the game mode is Survival Multiplayer. At the moment there are no monsters, but we hope to have this rectified by Notch at the end of the month. What you can do, however, is mine and craft 95% of ores and items respectively in a persistent, stable world alongside some of our more well-known members and some of our staff (including Seph, if that's what gives you a boner), as well as engage in solo or collaborative construction efforts like the lighthouse pictured above (fully constructed by yours truly).

Who runs the server?
I'm the sole owner of this server. Seph has kindly pointed "minecraft.romulation.net" to the server, meaning you don't need to worry about a complex IP. Borealis is running off a dedicated server with a 100Mbps connection out and I have a decent amount of experience with the server and the systems involved, so uptime is likely to be fairly high on full release.

I want in! What do I need?
Good luck. Until the Halloween update is installed and fully stable on the server, access is restricted to my designated testers/bros. Most of them are from IRC. Deal with it. This is to ensure we are fully aware of the limitations involved, as well as providing us on IRC a server to continue to play around in (our last server was hosted from Dino's home PC). That said, even when it "opens up" the server is going to essentially be invite only.
I would still suggest purchasing the game. It's incredible value for money at the moment and the Halloween update is going to be rad to the max.

Why advertise if it's invite-only?
Because this is also the Minecraft Discussion thread where we talk about the awesome shit we make.


Borealis will be properly online by the week starting the 8th of November.

I even made a tiny little circuit on that lighthouse's spire. It flashes little red lights on and off.

Oh yeah, and I have an underwater base that I'm slowly expanding that you can only access through the lighthouse.

I have much to offer, my powers of bloody-mindedness and my inability to plan structures properly should lead to some interesting structures.

 

Minecraft was free on one weekend, so I got it. This game is damn fun.

 

I spend maybe ten minutes last night before I got tired and went to bed.

is this game free and is it avaible to play yet?

 

It was 13.95USD (or... 9.99 GBP, I think) to buy when I bought it a few weeks ago. It's well worth the small price. It's a single time pay, all updates, etc. after that are free. You can play the "Creative" version for free. But all it is is a building area, none of the better features of the full version.

It's been available for a while. On Oct 31st, Notch (game creator) is releasing an update that will add a few things and fix bugs in the Multiplayer (hopefully a lot of them).

Borealis is Alpha, not Creative. Nobody who has not bought the game will be able to access the server.

 

I'm going to buy this game sometime next week when I get paid. It looks to be very good.
